The results of the ICILS 2023 study are a wake-up call for the German education system. More than 40% of eighth-graders only reach the lowest levels of competence in dealing with digital media. The figures show that Germany is in danger of not adequately preparing an entire generation for the digital future.
Why digital education is more important today than ever
Digitalization has changed almost all areas of life and work. It is no longer an option, but a prerequisite for social participation and professional success. Students not only need to learn how to use digital tools, but also how to deal critically with information and solve problems creatively.
However, the ICILS 2023 study shows that Germany is falling further behind in international comparison. Countries such as South Korea and Denmark are setting standards, while many schools in Germany are still struggling with basic equipment.
At Phorms Campus Hamburg, we face this challenge with a clear goal: to help our students become confident, critical and responsible shapers of the digital future.
Our approach: A well thought-out media concept: All teachers on our bilingual campus always see themselves as language and media teachers, regardless of the subject they teach.
As the only private school in Hamburg that consistently focuses on digital education, we have developed a comprehensive media concept that accompanies students from elementary school through to the Abitur. Our vision: digital skills must be promoted in the same way as traditional subjects.
1. early integration of digital education
Our pupils use iPads as a learning tool from as early as Year 3. They learn to use digital books, create presentations and use Microsoft 365. The focus is not only on the technology, but also on safe and responsible use.
2. state-of-the-art infrastructure
Our school has WLAN 6 standard and excellent network coverage throughout the building. This technical basis makes it possible to effectively integrate digital media into lessons.
3. continuous further training for teachers
Our teachers receive regular further training in order to use digital media sensibly and effectively. We use platforms such as Fobizz, which offer extensive training courses and teaching materials for the education sector. This ensures that our approach is always up to date and meets the needs of the students.
4. fostering creative and critical thinking skills
In addition to the use of technology, we also promote critical awareness. Our students learn how to work with AI tools such as ChatGPT, but also gain insights into ethical issues and the protection of their data.
